What is Public Art?
What is Public Art?
As the name suggests, Public Art is artwork of any form that is exhibited in a public space for people to view and (where possible) interact with. Public Art can range from permanent statues or sculptures, to temporary performances or artworks on pavements and buildings. As long as art is presented in the public realm (any space that is free and open to everyone), it can be considered Public Art.
What are our ambitions for Public Art in Adur and Worthing?
Public Art can bring real benefits to people and places.
It can enhance the places where we live, work and relax and create a sense of belonging. Public Art is often made in response to a specific place and communities can get involved in the design and making of the work.
Public spaces that are welcoming and well-designed encourage people to visit, meet and socialise together. They can help to support good physical and mental health, help reduce health inequalities and improve people's wellbeing.
Public Art can provide opportunities to understand the past and enjoy the present, to contemplate and remember, to interact and enjoy.
Public Art can support the local economy by creating a better, more attractive environment for residents, shoppers, businesses and visitors and can create work opportunities for artists, including from the local area.
