What to do in an emergency
In the event of an emergency:
- dial 999 for police, fire, ambulance or the coastguard
- follow the advice given to you by the emergency services
- do not put yourself or others in further danger
- try to remain calm, think before acting and try to reassure others
- check for injuries and remember to help yourself before attending to others
If you are not involved in a major incident, but are close by or believe you may be in danger, the advice would usually be:
- dial 999 to contact the relevant emergency services, if this hasn't already been done
- stay inside a safe building until you are advised to do otherwise
- check your local radio or TV station for updates and public safety advice (see below)
