About allotments in Adur

Adur District Council administer 13 allotment sites across Lancing & Sompting, Shoreham-by-Sea, and Southwick & Fishersgate. The allotment sites vary in size and the majority of individual plots are around 5 rods.

Allotments are available for any resident of Adur aged over 18. There are waiting lists for all of our sites, and you must be an Adur resident to be added to the list. The waiting time for a plot can be up to five years depending on the site.

What to do if you want an allotment in Adur

Allotments are very popular and we do have waiting lists for all our sites. You may find a longer wait at some sites than others. You can go on the waiting list for one or two sites that you would prefer when you complete your application. You will however only be able to take out a tenancy at a single site.

Once you have chosen the site you are interested in you will need to register on a waiting list. You can complete the online application for an allotment form to start the process:

If a plot becomes available we will contact you.

Please ensure that you notify us of any changes in your contact details.

Finally when you have agreed an allocated plot you will need to fill in an 'allotment agreement' form. Then as long as you comply with the terms of the agreement the allotment plot is available for your use.

Charges for Adur allotments

The allotment year runs from 1st October to 30th September each year.

Prices are subject to an annual increase in April, prices correct as at 1st April 2025.

Charges 1st October 2024 to 30th September 2025:

up to 2.5 rods: £40.00
up to 5.5 rods: £70.00
up to 10 rods: £139.00
raised bed, 1 rod: £25.00

Charges 1st October 2025 to 30th September 2026:

up to 2.5 rods: £42.00
up to 5.5 rods: £73.00
up to 10 rods: £146.00
raised bed, 1 rod: £26.50

Allotment tenants over the age of 65 will qualify for a 30% discount. Proof of age will need to be provided to claim this discount. This can be a photocopy of a bus pass, birth certificate or anything that has your date of birth on it.

Deposit

All sites require a refundable deposit which includes one site key:

refundable deposit: £25.00 per plot
additional key: £10.00
