First families to move into new Adur council homes
Released: Wednesday, 03 January 2024
Families are to move into the first council homes we've built across the Adur district on the site of our little-used garage compounds and car parks.
Our small sites programme involves the use of our brownfield land in Sompting, Lancing, Shoreham, Southwick and Fishersgate to create extra homes that local residents need.
The first development to be completed is at St Giles Close in Shoreham, where two two-bedroom houses and two one-bedroom bungalows have risen on what was an old garage block. More than a dozen old garages were demolished to make way for the new homes.
Each of the homes is equipped with an air source heat pump to make the properties more sustainable by providing the residents with renewable energy. They also come with individual gardens, garden sheds and designated parking spaces.
Their first occupants are due to move in this week.
Cllr Carson Albury, the council's cabinet member for Adur Homes and customer services, said:
“The new homes in St Giles Close look amazing and I'm really hopeful the residents moving in will be very happy indeed.
“By turning little-used council land into new homes, we can help local families to have a roof over their heads for a rent they can afford, while at the same time reducing the pressure on our budgets.”
Cllr Albury was given a tour of the new homes alongside some of our officers by Steve King, the construction director at Cheesmur, the contractor on the St Giles Close project.
Mr King said:
“The brownfield site had reached the end of its useful life. This development means the council can breathe new life into the community without the loss of any greenfield space.
“We're delighted to be able to play our small part in this great work.”
The small sites programme involves us redeveloping land across the district. Work is currently underway on sites at Leconfield Road in Lancing, Sylvan Road in Sompting, Wilmot Road in Shoreham and Gardner Road in Fishersgate.
In Lancing, construction of new homes will also begin at the Daniel Close and Gravelly Crescent garage sites and the South Street car park in 2024.
You can follow the progress of the small sites programme over the coming weeks and months via our Adur District Council Facebook page, or you can find out more about the Adur small sites programme on our website.
