Owning a dangerous dog (Adur Homes tenants or residents)

Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 it is against the law for a dog to be dangerously out of control anywhere. This means in a public place or on private property, such as the owner's home and garden. The law applies to all breeds of dog.

The XL Bully breed dog has been included on the list of banned dogs (such as Pit Bull Terriers). It is against the law to sell, abandon, re-home or breed banned dogs. Ownership is only permitted with a certificate of exemption.

If you have a banned dog it must be muzzled, and on a lead when in a public place. This includes the communal areas of Adur Homes properties.

All banned dogs and other dogs that behave dangerously must be muzzled and kept in a separate closed room when council staff visit your home.

If you are a tenant or resident of an Adur Homes property you must provide evidence of the exemption certificate for your dog on request. You must also hold third party liability insurance for neutered and microchipped XL Bully breed and other banned dogs.

We appreciate your compliance with the new requirements. Additionally the council's tenancy agreement confirms the criteria for keeping a pet in your home.
