Helping Hand Scheme

Helping Hand is a scheme that allows bus passengers who may need extra help to ask - discreetly, directly and quickly - by showing a basic instruction card to the driver when boarding the bus. The free card is yellow and the size of a credit card. Some examples of messages that it can carry include:

  • Please face me I lip read
  • Please wait until I am seated
  • Please call out my requested stop
  • Please lower the ramp and step
  • Pushchair can't be folded
  • Requires priority seating

The card can be used to indicate to the driver an unlimited range of other needs - for example, that assistance might be needed because of epilepsy, Alzheimer's or dementia. There is also space for emergency contact details.

Helping Hand cards are designed to help improve customer experience for those who may benefit from additional assistance.

The cards are administered by Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company, and Metrobus. The scheme is also supported by other local bus operators, including The Big Lemon, Compass Travel and Stagecoach.
